Professional Profile

Dr Francis Ghan graduated in 1974 from the University of Adelaide suma cum Laude, with high Distinctions in all his subjects, as well as winner of The Archibald Watson prize for Surgical Anatomy and H K Fry prize for Psychological Medicine.

Soon after, he commenced his intership at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and then entered Basic Surgical Training. In 1978, he commenced Advanced Orthopaedic training, obtaining his Fellowship in 1982. That is also the year he entered private surgical practice and appointed visiting Consultant to the Lyell McEwin Hospital.

Francis had the opportunity to visit many overseas Orthopaedic Centres of excellence . He spent sometime in Bern Switzerland studying the Knee under Dr Werner Mueller, and Alabama USA under Dr William Clancy.

In the first 10 years of his practice Francis did general orthopaedic surgery including spine but with very strong interests in Hip and Knee arthroplasty and Knee reconstuctive surgery.

Francis always tries to keep abreast in his field and regularly attended the AOA Annual Scientific Meeting as well as numerous overseas special meetings such as ESSKA and ISAKOS and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meetings.

In 2015, Francis retired from Royal Adelaide Hospital but maintain his status as Emeritus Consultant. In 2022 Francis retired from performing surgery, but is still very active in Medicolegal practice.

Medicolegal Practice

Since 2010, Francis has been in active medicolegal practice.

Francis vast experience in general and trauma orthopaedics makes him well qualified to give highly sought opinion on difficult orthopaedic and musculoskeletal trauma injuries, both in work injury and motor vehicle accident settings.

Francis works at MLCOA and eReports and consults on a spectrum of medicolegal cases from lawyers, government departments, businesses, motor vehicle accident commission and Insurance companies.

Francis guiding principle is not to be an advocate for any parties and to give a true , objective and most importantly an independent opinion.

He has a forensic mind and will not any stone unturned to discover the true facts of the matter. Combined with his vast orthopaedic experience, his medicolegal report is very specific and of high quality.

Independent Medical Assessor North Adelaide, 2010 - present

Commenced regular medicolegal practice in 2010, conducting independent medical assessment of claimants with general orthopaedic conditions across various medicolegal jurisdictions. These include assessments for workers’ compensation,motor vehicle accidents, Veteran’s Affairs, fitness for duties, total and permanent disability claims, and assisting with law firms’ assessments.

Francis is the Chairperson of the Australian Chinese Medical Association Foundation. The Foundation is actively involved in raising money for various charities, and annually it holds the Blanket Appeal Charity Dinner, the Charity Gala Dinner.

The ACMA Foundation has raised close to one million dollars and donated more than $400,000 to various Australian and Overseas Charities.

Personal Interest

Francis enjoys travelling, is an avid reader of non-fictional books, developing his Mandarin language skills, landscape photography, listening to music and keeping fit by hiking across the Adelaide hills. He can be found enjoying time with his family and friends in his spare time, ideally over dinner enjoying his favourite Italian and Asian cuisines.
